It’s a shameful act that has just happened near Lakshmibai College, University of Delhi. A 20-year-old, 2nd-year student from Lakshmibai College has been allegedly attacked with acid by her stalker and his associates. According to the information given by the Delhi Police, the names of the attackers have been identified. The incident occurred when the woman was walking towards her college for an extra class. Reportedly, the accused are from Mukundpur and have been stalking the girl for the past few months. The situation escalated after an argument, following which the accused threw acid on her face. She tried to protect her face by raising her hands, which caused burns on her hands.

The question arises, in a university like DU, where students from small cities, villages, and all over India come to pursue their dreams, shouldn’t there be adequate security measures to prevent such incidents? Doesn’t the university have a responsibility to ensure students’ safety around its campuses? On a regular basis, DU is reportedly known for the heinous crimes that have been happening around. If a girl or even a boy isn’t safe around their educational institution, then where should they go?

An unfit security guard who is just there to check the ID cards of students is not going to protect them from any crime happening around them, even in their presence. Delhi University needs to take strict action against this and all the crimes happening around the campus. Why is there no CCTV security around the gates of colleges, and if there is, why are they not in working condition? This has been a problem in all the colleges of DU. The majority of cameras installed for student security are not in working condition.

That girl who suffered severe burns on her hands could have been hurt to an extent that it could have taken her whole life from her. Who will take the responsibility? Who will be responsible for this? And most importantly, what are we going to do next? A candle march? Or a social media post? DU needs to take accountability for this incident and strictly take major actions, such as increasing security around the campus with different initiatives like proper CCTV surveillance, a bunch of security guards, and teams for patrolling around the campus 24×7.
